Robert Louis Stevenson, Robert Louis Stevenson, Treasure Island, Robert Louis Balfour Stevenson (November 13, 1850 – December 3, 1894) Scottish novelist, poet, essayist and travel writer. His best known books include Treasure Island, stolen and strange story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.Stevenson was admired by many authors, including Jorge Luis Borges, Ernest Hemingway, Rudyard Kipling, Marcel Schwob, Vladimir Nabokov, JM Barrie, GK Chesterton, who told him that “he seemed to find the right words at the time of his pen, like a man playing trifles.
University of South Carolina marked the centenary of the death of Robert Louis Stevenson in 1894 with a special exhibition illustrating his life and writing career. Relying on the excellent holdings Stevenson Department of University Libraries’ rare books and special collections and the additional elements of the G. Ross Roy Collection of Scottish literature, the original exhibit included most of the first editions of Robert Louis Stevenson, an early edition of the journal Treasure Island and other stories of adventure, and a full range of its track work, a sense of fantasy, such as the Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and then the Scottish novels. This online version includes additional material not included in the original exhibition as well as hypertext links to other sites of interest.
The exhibition and accompanying symposium was partially funded by the South Carolina Humanities Commission, the state-level agency the National Endowment of Humanities.
